| A coaching collaboration is a partnership
with overtones of dictatorship. One partner, the coach, has to be
in charge for it to work. Yet the other partner, the player, or
client, has to be confident enough to speak up when collaboration
threatens to become domination.
Unlike the sports coach, the performance coach is there to make
suggestions, to provide guidance and to help you become a more skilled
professional - their power is not absolute. |
There's also a certain element of cheerleading
in performance coaching. Your coach will point out mistakes and
make suggestions for fixing them, that's their job. But the coach
will also point out when you've done something well, when you've
made improvement, when you've mastered a new skill. That's part
of the job, too.
A good definition of the performance coach:
Part Mom, part dictator, part spouse - all focused on you and
your success. |
