In the best of all possible worlds with all writers being created equal, every manuscript would follow this plan.

However, some of us need more drafts, some less. Some need lots of help along the way, some only need a precautionary proofread before submitting to an agent or publisher. Many of us would like to have agents but haven't find one.

Be that as it may, the Lifecycle above is a representation of the flow of manuscript from creation through publication.

Each writing professional has a place in the Lifecycle. For example, you don't want to bring in a critique pro until you know the manuscript is nearly "there" and want another, more informed, opinion.

Likewise, it would be a waste of money and time to hire an editor when the writing still needs work - all that editing and correcting could wind up in the circular file when you do a rewrite.

Take a look at the table below to see where each Pro belongs and how extensive their involvement and responsibilities should be.

Choose the Right Pro

If you need a high level of outside involvement, accept that and get the help you need. It's better to seek help early than to be fighting a deadline and a troubled manuscript at the same time.

Writing coaches and book doctors may be what you need to complete a project. Think about them when you hit what seems like a dead end.

Click on the red pro titles for more details on what each one can do for you.

PRO LIFECYCLE STEP RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT
Critique Pro Early, usually before professional editing Advise High, you know the manuscript isn't perfect.
Coach Midway, after critique when problems have been identified Advise High, you need help working through the problems.
Copy Editor Past mid-point when manuscript is nearing final Advise Medium, manuscript is in pretty good shape.
Line Editor Late, after copy edit, if necessary Advise Low, manucript needs only "fine tuning."
Proofreader Late, just before going to agent or publisher Advise/Alter (with permission) Low, manuscript only needs a final check.
Book Doctor Late - deadline is looming and manuscript is in trouble Alter - usually takes over the project Highest - manuscript will not be accepted as it is, and you can't fix it.
